This is the most eco-friendly ski resort in Europe!
Europe’s first lift-free ski resort
At the Italian ski resort of Homeland, near Montespluga, ski lifts have now become a thing of the past. In a bid to provide a better immersion into mountain life, the resort is encouraging its patrons to discover ski touring. A unique experience where holidaymakers can climb the resort’s slopes before skiing or snowboarding back down.
There will be no more ski lifts or chairlifts, just marked itineraries covering more than 36km2, some of it off-track, to the delight of mountain and nature lovers. It’s a great way to promote ski touring. In addition to being environmentally friendly, this system aims to offer total immersion in the mountain landscape.
Thrifty skiers will also appreciate this initiative, as the lift pass is no longer a major budget consideration for the holiday. As GEO points out, the Homeland resort even offers ski and boot hire kits for the modest sum of €55 a day.
While the concept of ski touring is very popular in ski resorts in the United States, this is the first time it is being tried in Europe.
